The art of the found item

I recently attended the Ai Weiwei exhibit at the Israel museum in Jerusalem. Ai Weiwei is known for refashioning found pieces into art. His trees series particularly intrigued me. I thought they were magnificent. From every angle I could find something interesting – a face, a mood, or a pattern.

The trees are made from deadwood he found in China. In his selection and organization I see first of all the eye of an artist, envisioning something completely new from the material at hand.

In some small way, that is how I feel confronted with a mountain of discarded clothes. I am much more inspired by a thrift store than an carefully organized retail store.
